WHY PHYSIOTHERAPY & FITNESS ?
Hello everyone, I want to throw some light on what is basically physiotherapy and how it can prove wonders in our lives. Physiotherapy if we break this word into two halves then physio means knowing your body’s own physiology and therapy means to heal the body through various treatment patterns like manual therapy, exercise therapy, resisitance therapy, electrotherapy etc. In terms of physio I mean not only the physiology but also the detailed study of body specially the joints and muscles and hence it makes one therapist capable of making a difference to patient’s life by regaining the normal function and mobility in life. One who is bedridden can be made to do the activities of daily living on own with the help of physiotherapy. Talking about the various branches, the more we can think the more it expands.
Other fields are:
The physical therapy comprises of not only diagnosis but is has a perfect pattern through which we can reach our decision. By following the complete clinical assessment pattern followed my manual tests we come to a conclusion of chronic injury, pain, disability or muscular limitation. Lets have a quick review on various branches of it:
1) Musculoskeletal: This branch deals with detail studies involving muscles, joints, connective tissue, cartilage, meniscus, ligaments, spinal discs and so on. Any chronic pain like low back pain or postural problem is treated under this branch with the help of manual therapy, electrical, exercise therapy and makes person gain back its function.eg: low back pain, ankle sprain, fractures etc.
2) Cardiothoracic: It is a very important branch. A person who is going to have heart transplant or any other heart related operation faces lung problems. Breathing technique is to be taught by the therapist to make maximum air intake possible in patient. Every renowned hospital has a physiotherapist in their team and then with the help of exercise therapy along with some fixed protocols are followed to help the patient get back to normal routine as soon as possible. Some conditions are: apendectomy, open heart surgery, bypass surgery, asthma etc.
3) Neuromuscular : This field deals with brain injuries occurring in road traffic accidents. Also strokes, degenerative diseases etc. Eg: parkinson’s disease, alzimer’s disease.
4) Paediatric :Children are God’s gift and when they are in problem, we all get heart broken. But yes physiotherapists try to make those children capable of doing their activities of daily living as normally as possible and if not then with some amendments. Eg: CP child, DMD child etc.
5) Sports: One of the main branches in India which has now gained its position. All the players we know face injuries and are more prone to them as their lifestyle is such. So every team has appointed a physiotherapist for their players. Common injuries in sports are: tennis elbow, ankle sprain, shin splints in runners, runner’s high in another one and so on and so forth.
6) Obstetrics & Gyneac: A little knowledge is there regarding this field in India and no separate branch is being offered by most of the colleges. But yes this has proven to be the miracle for women abroad. Ladies suffering from urinary incontinence have shown to improve dramatically with the treatments offered by this branch. Also pregnant ladies have bliss with this as their 9 months become easier and healthier .
7) Fitness & Postural care: This branch deals with the physical fitness training of the individual by not only focussing on one specific area rather general body fitness is the agenda. Many athletes take advice of therapists to inculcate a health exercise regimen in their routine and also for better balanced diet programs. Weight loss in a healthier way can be done with the help of a therapist.
